Sanchez Reveals Injury Could Recover Before World Cup

Colorado Rapids midfielder Vicente Sanchez has revealed that he could be back in action before the World Cup begins. The 34-year-old has been missing from the first team action for the last few weeks due to a knee injury. The MLS will be taking a break for about three weeks due to the World Cup commitments. The Uruguay defender has said that he is likely to come back before the break. Sanchez has been one of the important players for the club this season after scoring five goals.

Four of those goals have been from the penalty spot, but these goals have helped the club stay in hunt for a play-off place at the end of the season. He suffered the injury while playing against LA Galaxy a few weeks ago. Back then, the club confirmed that he will miss the next two weeks of action. Rapids manager Pablo Mastroeni confirmed a few days ago that the club is working extremely hard to bring the player back before this timeframe. He, however, also maintained that has one of the older players in the squad, they also have to be cautious before pushing him to the limits.

Pablo Mastroeni says that the club do not want to lose him for two or three months by bringing him back too soon.

“It’s healing quickly. I’m hoping to be back on the field soon. I think it’s all going well,” said the midfielder. “He’s a good person to have available. Obviously a wealth of experience, and more importantly he’s a game changer, a guy that can flip the game on its head. We want to make sure that he comes back 100 percent. It’s just 11 games into the season, we don’t want him out for two more months,” said the coach about racing him back.

PETKE UNSURE

New York Red Bulls manager Mike Petke has said that he is still not sure when to release the star names like Tim Cahill for international action. Australian defender Tim Cahill will be one of the players to depart the club in order to take part in the World Cup 2014.

Australia have qualified for this tournament and will be playing up against Netherlands and Spain in the group stages. Apart from Cahill, New York Red Bulls are also likely to lose Roy Miller as well. Even during the World Cup 2014, MLS season will be going as per schedule. Continue reading “PETKE UNSURE”

BWP CAN PLAY

Bradley Wright-Phillips’ chances of getting into the starting line-up has improved massively after New York Red Bulls lost their opening match of the season 4-1 against Vancouver Whitecaps. This was a disastrous result for the team, which is hoping to win the title. It was largely because of the absence of former Barcelona striker Thierry Henry, who decided to not play in the match because of the pitch condition. Manager Mike Petke went in for the combination of Tim Cahill, who was suffering from fatigue after international involvement with Australia, and Peguy Luyindula.

However, the plan backfired and it was only after the involvement of Wright Phillips as a substitute that New York Red Bulls started looking threatening. Wright Phillips also scored the only goal of the game for New York. Even though he was happy with the goal, the player said that it was noteworthy to discuss about goals from a single player in the 4-1 thrashing. Petke will have been impressed with his attitude and he is likely to begin the next match showed Henry be available once again.

The defeat also exposed the frailties in attack should Henry be unavailable. The manager is likely to address this concern in the next transfer window.

“In a 4-1 defeat, I don’t really care about the goal. I just gambled. The ball was in the air. Luckily, I got to it [and] it went in. Me, Lloyd, Jonny, we talk a lot in the training ground or before the games. I think it helps going into the games, but they are just easy guys to play with,” said Wright Phillips. “You could see towards the end of the [2013] season, he would’ve been a great asset for us in the playoffs but we didn’t go further, unfortunately for us,” said Henry.
